Having completed Kilimanjaro twelve months ago, Broseley CEO, Tim Thursfield, is staying a little closer to home this time, with the ‘Walk to Freedom’.
The ‘Chemin de la Liberte’ was the toughest of several escape routes across the Pyrenees. During the second World War downed British and allied airman, and others, took this route to cross into Spain and from there repatriation back to the UK. All this was made possible with the help, bravery and expertise of the French Resistance.
Running from Saint-Girons (German border forces HQ) in the Ariege district of France to near the village of Isil in Spain, the ‘Walk to Freedom’ will take four grueling days to complete.
The trek will take in the high mountains of the Ariege, passing houses and barns that were used as hiding places by the escapees. The group will encounter rocky cirques, mountain lakes, boulder fields and snow filled gullies! Comments Tim “Exciting, humbling and exhausting all at once”.
