Handmade tiles by artisan tile makers from around the world, founder Sarah Hopkinson will be exhibiting her eclectic collections for the first time at 100% Design.
While trawling through all the product offerings at this year’s show, we were struck by her stunning ranges, which include concrete, ceramic, bronze, glass terracotta, glazed, hand-painted, chiseled and exterior. The colours range from vibrant, iridescent to gentle subtle shades and the patterns and alternative dimensions are original designs by the makers working in close collaboration with Sarah.
Here we show some of our favourites, as follows:
- Marble finish oil glazed aquamarine terracotta
- Hand stenciled blue & white glazed
- Chiselled terracotta in green
- Kitchen in blue, with a herringbone terracotta floor
- Let’s Stay Home!
- Green to Blue herringbone exterior step
- Kitchen with blue & white floor with traditional blue tasseled wall-hanging
The UK’s tile industry is largely machine made and the Heritage Crafts Association considers that floor and wall hand made tile making to be at ‘endangered’ risk of becoming a lost skill.
Inspired by the Centre for Local Economic Strategies, Sarah is supporting a culture to develop community wealth building throughout the public and private sectors of her local towns. Concurrently she is working to develop a more ethically, environmentally and economically sustainable practice.
Sarah has been collaborating with Margate’s talented artists and makers to
produce Margate-made designed and handmade tile ranges. The company not only works with local artists but also imports from countries outside the UK, which have retained their artisanal industries, and she has amassed a Collective of highly skilled and talented artists and makers blending both contemporary design with traditional artisanal techniques.
